How Momentum Bell works

Momentum Bell is a free, live-updating watchlist of US-listed stocks that are moving and drawing heavy trading activity right now.

From the market to your screen

  1. Scanning. A scanner runs continuously during premarket, regular and after-hours sessions, looking across the market for stocks that meet a set of filters: a price range, a minimum percentage gain on the day, and a minimum dollar volume.
  2. Measuring attention. For each qualifying stock, the system measures how actively it is trading in real time and turns that into the Momentum Bell Score. See how to read the score.
  3. Publishing. Results are sent to a cloud database and this page listens for changes, so rows update within moments without reloading the page.
  4. Dropping out. When a stock no longer meets the criteria, it leaves the main list and appears in the Dropped-out section with the largest gain it reached that day.

How to read the watchlist

The watchlist is empty when the market is closed, so here is how the score colors, the All Movers and Focus buttons, and Sound look and work, using sample data.

GREENAbove 100 — High attention

What it means: This stock is among the busiest names on the list right now. Heavy trading activity is building around it, which is why it stands out from the rest.

What to do: Open the news and the chart, check the price, and compare Change% with Max Change to see how much of the move is already done. Above 500 the row lights up with a 🔥 fire banner. With Sound on, a rising alert sound plays when a score first crosses 100.

A high score means a stock is busy, not that its price will keep rising. Hypothetical screenshot with sample data.
